WHY LEARN PORTUGUESE?
1) Portuguese is the sixth most widely spoken language in the world, with more than 230 million speakers.
2) Portuguese is the official language Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and São Tomé e Príncipe and is also widely spoken in the Asian countries of Macau and Goa (india). The government of China considers Portuguese the third most important language in the world today after English and Spanish.
3) Estimates are that there are now 300,000,000 Portuguese speakers in the world. There is also a large community of Portuguese and Brazilian immigrants in the United States: the 2010 Census reports approximately 336,000 Brazilian-born residents. Portuguese language skills are highly prized by the U.S. Government, especially in foreign affairs, commerce, and defense.
4) Become more confident as your learn Portuguese by naturally draw comparisons to what is most familiar. Learning about another culture sheds light on aspects of our own culture—both positive and negative—we may not have previously considered. You may find a greater appreciation for what you have, or you may decide to shake things up!
